Military Sunday at First Baptist Church with Captain Scott
Smiley
Smiley was deployed to Mosul, Iraq, in fall 2004. While engaging a suspicious vehicle in April 2005, Captain Smiley
became the victim of a suicide car bombing that sent shrapnel into his brain, leaving him temporarily paralyzed and
permanently blind. Through the weeks and months of his recovering, he was told over and over by his doctors that his
Army career was over. Despite his injuries, Captain Smiley is proud to continue his service to the United States Army.
He works for the Army Accessions Command evaluating basic training policies and procedures and making field visits to
talk to soldiers about what to expect in war. Captain Smiley has said, “Being blind is no different than being sighted
– you just live life differently.”
You can hear his amazing story of triumph over tragedy on Sunday, November 19, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist
Church, 473 Sibley Street, Hammond, Indiana, 46320. For more information, call 219-932-0711 or visit
