Adopt a Sailor

December 21, 2010

Hammond, Indiana-December 25, 2010 - The Servicemen's Ministry, through the support of the First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indiana, will be hosting 500 sailors on Christmas Day as part of the Great Lakes Naval Station's Adopt-a-Sailor program. First Baptist Church has been helping to host these events for over five years.

Thousands of dollars and lots of turkeys and hams are collected every year to help give these recruits a "home away from home" for Christmas. The ministry will cook an average 450 pounds of turkey, 330 pounds of ham, and 550 pounds of potatoes (peeled, boiled, and mashed), with all the trimmings.

This year, for the first time, the Servicemen's Ministry has teamed up with WRTW 90.5, the Key, to raise money for the program by establishing its own Adopt-a-Sailor program. For $20 any listener of 90.5 FM can go in or go online to adopt-a-sailor. This money is used to help provide continental breakfast, a Christmas lunch, and Grandma's leftover dinner, along with many sports activities, entertainment, and the opportunity to call home for Christmas.

For any details about the program or making a donation, please contact Brian Cassada with the Servicemen's Ministry or Dan Wolfe with 90.5 FM, WRTW, at (219) 932-0711. For any media-related questions please contact Eddie Wilson at (773) 682-2852 or (219) 228-2922.
