Sailors Enjoy a Taste of Home This Thanksgiving
November 25, 2009
It is the goal of Servicemen's Ministry of the First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indiana; bring the dream of home, thanksgiving, and family to as many as 100 servicemen from Great Lakes Naval Base in Great Lakes, Illinois. Each year, a large number of sailors from the base are unable to travel home for the Thanksgiving holiday. The Servicemen's Ministry and Brian Cassada, a former Air Force captain, will be serving these men, offering a taste of home when home is out of reach.
Since November of 2004, we have been participating in the Adopt-A-Sailor Program at the Regional Training Center. We host as many sailors as we possibly can for Thanksgiving and Christmas. To date we have been privileged to host 1,748 sailors during the holiday season. On the first Thanksgiving that we participated in the program, we had 191 sailors join us for a traditional Thanksgiving meal.
In addition to three home-cooked meals, some time to unwind has been scheduled as well. Diversions will include organized sports, video games, and board games. Professional sports will also be broadcast on big-screen TVs so the men can root for their favorite teams.
