First Baptist Church of Hammond Awarded

November 3, 2008

Reformers Unanimous International, a faith-based addictions program with over 800 chapters world wide, held its annual conference recently in Rockford, Illinois. During the conference, First Baptist Church of Hammond was awarded "Church of The Year" for 2008. In receiving the award, First Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Jack Schaap, was cited as having influenced many churches nationally and internationally to start RU programs. The conference was hosted in early October by RU founder and president, Steve Curington, and Pastor Paul Kingsbury at North Love Baptist Church in Rockford. Reformers Unanimous International has chapters in 11 countries, including the United States.

First Baptist Church of Hammond began offering the program five years ago, with 25 people present at their first meeting. Today, an average of 300 people attend Reformers Unanimous meetings every Friday night at First Baptist Church of Hammond, with programs offered in English and Spanish. The program treats a wide number of addictions, including substance abuse, alcoholism, weight problems, anger issues, tobacco addictions, gambling addictions, and many others.
