Monday Evening's Preacher - Dr. Raymond Hancock
It was a night filled with song, surprises and Spirit-filled preaching, as Pastors' School® 2009 kicked off in grand style! Stirring music from the choir was enjoyed by all, including
"Little Is Much", "We Serve A Mighty God", and "To God Be The Glory." Brother Schaap introduced the evening’s special guest, Dr. Raymond Hancock, whose fiery preaching had the entire
room either on the edge of their seats or on their feet. Several videos filled the IMAG screens as well, including a biographical tribute to Dr. Hancock, and the story of missionary
Henry Morrison’s homecoming (featuring actual footage from that day in 1911). The evening’s big surprise rolled into the auditorium on four wheels, as Brother Schaap honored Dr. Hancock
for his 50+ years in the ministry with a special gift: a brand new pearl white 2008 Chevy custom conversion van, with all of the "bells and whistles," and then some! We trust Monday
night is an indicator of even greater things to come-- for Pastors’ School® 2009!
"Greatly the same, but vastly different" would be too simple a synopsis for the second outstanding day and evening of Pastors' School®.
It is, however, accurate.
Tuesday night was alive with song, as the choir launched the evening with a spirited rendering of "Wonderful God." The congregational
music was exceptional, too, as Choir Director Mario Cuozzo led the entire auditorium in an A Capella version of "It Is Well (With My Soul)." Guest singer
Alvin Martinez of North Valley Baptist Church sang "I Take Him Back" to an enthusiastic room. And, surprise guest Johnny Hudson was honored Tuesday evening-- a
Maryland-based evangelist born with no arms and only half a leg and one foot. A brief video about Brother Hudson was shown, profiling his amazing life, his typing
skills (46 words per minute), his bowling ability (average 136 per game) and his heart for God. After Pastor Jack Schaap honored him with a brief introduction,
Brother Hudson spoke briefly, using pointed humor to challenge all present to fulfill our commissions from Christ "without excuse."
Pastor Schaap had another surprise to unveil: a beautiful, custom-made hardwood pulpit, wheeled in and presented to the evening's guest
preacher, Dr. Jack Trieber of North Valley Baptist Church in Santa Clara, California. Dr. Trieber was as moved by the gift as the crowd was by his sermon! He preached
with transparency on "Protecting
Your Spirit," weaving both song and personal testimony into a powerful message that filled the altar as the evening came to a close. Another jam-packed evening
awaits, as Dr. David Gibbs, Jr. and many more surprises lie ahead!
Wednesday Evening's Preacher - Dr. David Gibbs, Jr.
For many, Wednesday summarized the international appeal of Pastors' School®: a menu of events so vast in scope that one would be hard-pressed not to benefit, regardless
of need. Kyle, an Australian delegate, remarked, "I’ve been to the last three (Pastors’ Schools), and they’ve all been wonderful!"
The day’s sessions were informative,
each hosted by experts in their respective fields.
Brother Larry Brown spoke during one of the morning sessions on Health, remarking on how changes in diet and
exercise have revolutionized his life. He follows a cycling regimen that often exceeds 100 miles per day! Brother Brown had been diagnosed with incurable colon
cancer in recent years, but the Lord delivered him from it and many delegates have been the beneficiaries of his experience.
One of many popular and well-attended
Wednesday afternoon sessions was "Energize Your Church Through The Media Ministry." Moderated by FBC’s Media Department Coordinator Dan Wolfe, Wednesday’s sessions
focused on video production and optimizing your church’s sound system. Staff member Dan Mock discussed cost-saving and time-saving techniques for producing "cutting
edge" church video, while the First Baptist Church Media team hosted an animated question and answer session.
All attention shifted to the auditorium for the evening
service, and the house was packed. The music was exceptional, as Steve Srein performed, "I’m Amazed" with the adult choir and orchestra, reflecting on the wonderful
love of our Savior. "And Can It Be That I Should Gain?" was another rousing highlight, conducted by Choir Director Mario Cuozzo, and sung by the congregation.
Shortly thereafter, news footage rolled on the IMAG screens, profiling the life-- and conversion to Christ-- of Mosaab Hassan Yousef. Now going by the name of
"Joseph," this young man is the Palestinian son of the founder and leader of Hamas-- one of the most feared and sophisticated terrorist group in the middle east.
Once a leader of the youth movement for this anti-Jewish group, he is now a new and enthusiastic convert to Christ, and last night, he was honored by Dr. David
Gibbs, Jr. with the Hyles Defender Award for risking all to proclaim Christ.
Dr. Gibbs delivered the evening message, presenting a blend of hilarious anecdotes, rich testimony and superb pulpiteering. Referencing the Book of Jonah, he
challenged all present to "avoid the cruise ship to Tarshish," and avoid the trap of griping-- a grievous sin in the sight of God. The invitation that followed
filled the altar and the aisles leading to it, as scores of decisions were made.
Hearts were full, yet wanting more-- and there is plenty more to come-- as Thursday
promises to be a climactic day, with Pastor Jack Schaap closes out the conference!
For 46 years Pastors’ School® has been a time to refresh our spirits, renew old friendships, and retrain our sights "due north" with new goals for God. This year’s
conference was no exception, blending the unexpected with the expected—good, old-fashioned, rock-ribbed preaching.
The morning sessions included practical teaching from Dr. Ray Young, president of Hyles-Anderson College, who spoke on effective scheduling for the ministry
leader.
Dr. Young’s life epitomizes balance; he has used the same scheduling methods with great effect for 35 years, planning much of his monthly calendar a year in advance.
A highlight session for Thursday afternoon centered on missions; updates were given on the three teams currently on the field, and the India team was also introduced.
A video was shown profiling this new work, after which Dr. Doug Kalapp presented the team to the delegates. He reported that much progress has been made in securing
accommodations for the team, thanks to miraculous associations that God has arranged.
Closing night of Pastors’ School is always an emotionally powerful occasion, and this evening underscored the conference’s "Going the Distance" theme in amazing
ways. The music was again spectacular, as Barbara Burke and a 600-voice choir featuring children, teens, and adults performed "Lord, I Believe in You." The result
was so stirring, the song was performed again with the delegates joining in, creating a massive choir united in song—and spirit. Other musical highlights included
"Well Done, My Child" by Trophies of Grace and the children’s choir performing a playful rendition of "Keep on Pluggin’ Away." Prior to Pastor Schaap’s message,
a video was shown, profiling the courageous leadership of Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton. In 1914 Captain Shackleton and his hand-picked crew set sail for
the South Pole. Though the objective was not reached, the crew’s survival, endurance, and unity were the true crux of the story. The account made an effective
springboard into the evening’s message. Pastor Schaap preached from Mark Chapter 3, reminding all present that we are called to be with Him-- Jesus Christ. It
was an inspiring truth filled with personal testimony, and for the fourth night the altar was filled. Couples came forward, pastors came forward, and young men
surrendered—all pledging to "Go the Distance."
The Mercy Trio sang "I Will Go On," a fitting selection for both the invitation and the close to one of the
greatest Pastors’ Schools yet. To God be the glory!
